The Substack tax calculator
Move two sliders. Everything below updates as you go, and the maths is shown so you can check it.
You are currently handing Substack$5,000/yearfor hosting.
Switching to Ghost saves you $4,700/year ($12,650 over 3 years after our one-off migration fee). Your migration pays for itself in 3.7 months.
At this size Substack's 10% is close to what Ghost(Pro) costs, so the one-off fee would take over three years to earn back on price alone. Email me and I'll give you a straight answer.
Why not do it yourself
Because Substack already runs on Stripe, we map and import your existing Stripe subscription IDs directly into Ghost. Your paying readers never have to re-enter their card details.
Substack exports are full of messy inline HTML, broken button embeds, and proprietary paywall dividers. Our automated migration pipeline cleans every post, converts paywalls to native Ghost <!--members-only--> dividers, and re-hosts every image on your new Ghost CDN.
redirects.yamlMoving from /p/post-slug or WordPress date URLs without a complete redirect map kills search traffic. We generate and test a complete redirects.yaml ruleset and canonical audit so every backlink and Google ranking stays intact.
You don't end up on a generic default template. Pick any of our 9 premium Ghost 6 themes ($149 value included free), tailored with your typography, colour palette, logo, and newsletter design.
The 48-hour timeline
You send your Substack or WordPress export and connect Stripe. We spin up your staging site, run our automated archive cleanup, and configure your chosen theme.
We style your publication, verify every paywall divider, test all URL redirects, and send you a private staging link to review.
We run a final delta sync so you don't miss a single new subscriber or post, map your custom domain, and take your new Ghost publication live with zero downtime.

Questions
No. Substack runs on your own Stripe account, so we link that exact Stripe account to Ghost and import your paid members with their existing Stripe customer and subscription IDs. Renewals continue seamlessly, nobody sees a new checkout, and we time the cut-over so no one is charged by both platforms.
No. Every /p/slug or WordPress permalink on your own domain is permanently 301-redirected to its new Ghost URL through Ghost's redirects.yaml, and we test the full ruleset before launch.
One honest caveat: if you publish on a yourname.substack.com address, Substack owns that domain, so no redirect can be set up from it. In that case we leave a clear move notice there (see the next question) and your archive is re-published on your own domain.
Yes. Many writers keep a small shell publication on Substack: a pinned post and an about page that point to the new domain, so readers who find you through Substack land in the right place. Your full list, paid members and archive live on Ghost, and you own 100% of them.
Three things: a Substack .zip export (or a WordPress XML export), an admin invite to your Ghost(Pro) or self-hosted Ghost site, and your choice of theme. For paid members you'll also connect your Stripe account to Ghost, and I'll walk you through it.
Once we have your export and Ghost Admin access, your staging site and migration are guaranteed ready within 48 hours. The final domain switch is scheduled with you, because DNS changes depend on your registrar.
No. The migration works with both official Ghost(Pro) and any self-hosted Ghost 6 instance.
