Theme settings guide

Sanctuary, setting by setting.

Sanctuary gives you twenty controls in Ghost Admin — the look, your service times and live-stream link, the homepage and hero, a scripture verse, and where your forms send. Most of a church site is content rather than settings, so this guide covers both: what each setting does, and how sermons, ministries, events and prayer are set up with ordinary Ghost pages, posts and tags.

20 theme settings Ghost 6 designed for Product page Live demo ↗

Where the settings live

The twenty settings are in Ghost Admin, in one place:

Settings→Design & branding→Customize→Theme

Ghost groups them into Site wide and Homepage — the two groups used below. Your logo, publication icon, cover image and accent colour live one tab over, in Ghost's own Brand tab, and navigation is under Settings → Navigation.

Every setting has a sensible default and sections hide themselves until they have content, so the theme never shows an empty block. Treat the settings as refinements rather than a setup checklist.

First hour

Just activated the theme? These steps make it look like the demo. None is required for the theme to work.

  1. Brand it. Under Brand, upload your logo and publication icon, add a cover photograph, and pick a mid-to-dark accent colour. The accent drives links, buttons, panels and the footer.
  2. Enter your service times in Service schedule, and your Livestream url if you stream.
  3. Write your hero: a short heading and subheading, and a hero photograph if you do not want to use your cover.
  4. Create the pages from the table below, each with its template. A page that matches the slug picks its template up automatically.
  5. Add a few sermons tagged sermon, and optionally events, testimonies and news. See Sermons and Ministries, events & plans.
  6. Set up navigation. The primary menu becomes the header menu and the footer's Explore list. The secondary menu becomes the call-to-action buttons in the header, such as Give pointing to /giving/.
  7. Upload the routes file for clean addresses like /sermons/. See Beyond the settings.
  8. Set your Form endpoint before you go live, so the prayer and volunteer forms work.

All twenty settings

Use the search box to jump to a setting — it matches names, descriptions and placements as you type.

Site wide

Applies across the whole site.

Color scheme color_scheme SelectLight by default

Light and Dark force one palette for everyone. Auto follows each visitor's device and switches as it does.

Where it appears: every page, including the comments window.

The demo runs in Light. Choosing Dark or Auto also reveals Dark mode logo.

Secondary color secondary_color ColorGold (#c9962f) by default

A second accent used sparingly, such as the edge of quotations and testimonies and the colour wash of the Gradient hero. Your main colour is Ghost's own accent colour under Brand.

Where it appears: quotation edges, testimony cards and the Gradient hero.

Leave it gold unless it clashes with your main colour. See Look and feel.

Typography typography SelectClassic serif by default

Classic serif sets headings in Source Serif 4 and text in Source Sans 3. Contemporary sans uses Source Sans 3 throughout. Both are bundled with the theme. Traditional serif and System fonts use the visitor's own fonts.

Where it appears: all text on every page.

None of the four options contacts a font service, and the two system options load no font files at all. Fonts chosen in Ghost's own Brand settings are also supported.

Announcement text announcement_text TextEmpty by default

A dismissible notice bar for closures, special services and events. Leave it blank to hide the bar.

Where it appears: the top of every page, in your brand colour.

A visitor who closes the bar sees it again when you change the message. The dismissal is remembered per message, in that browser only.

Livestream url livestream_url TextEmpty by default

Your live-stream link, such as a YouTube channel's live address. It switches on the Watch online buttons and, during a service, a We're live badge.

Where it appears: the hero, Plan Your Visit, Service Times, the footer and the next-service banner.

The live badge shows from a service's start time until 105 minutes later, so it needs a Service schedule too. See Service times.

Service schedule service_schedule TextSunday 10:30 Morning Service; Sunday 18:30 Evening Service by default

Your weekly services on one line, in the form Day HH:MM Name; Day HH:MM Name. Add @ Campus after a name when you meet in more than one place.

Where it appears: the service times strip and cards, the next-service banner, the live badge and the footer.

Always type times in 24-hour form. Whether visitors see 18:30 or 6:30 PM follows your publication language. See Service times.

Form endpoint form_endpoint TextEmpty by default

Where the prayer and volunteer forms send. Paste an https:// webhook address from a forms service, or mailto:[email protected] to open the visitor's email app.

Where it appears: the Prayer and Volunteer pages.

Until you set this, those pages show a Contact card instead of a form, so a request is never silently lost. Plain http:// addresses are refused. See Forms and prayer.

Charity number charity_number TextEmpty by default

Your registered charity number. Registered charities in the UK are required to display it.

Where it appears: the footer.

Hidden while blank.

Show gift aid show_gift_aid ToggleOff by default

Adds a UK Gift Aid explainer, with a link for your declaration, to the Giving page.

Where it appears: the Giving page.

For UK registered charities only, which is why it is off by default.

Safeguarding contact safeguarding_contact TextEmpty by default

The person to contact about safeguarding, for example Jane Doe, 01234 567890.

Where it appears: the footer.

Hidden while blank.

Dark mode logo logo_dark ImageEmpty by default

An alternate logo for dark backgrounds, typically a light, transparent version. Your main logo is set in Ghost's own Brand settings.

Where it appears: the header, whenever the page is dark.

Shown in the settings panel only when Color scheme is Dark or Auto. With none set, your normal logo is used.

Homepage

Shapes the front page.

Scripture verse scripture_verse TextA short verse from Matthew 18 by default

A verse shown as a quiet band on the homepage. Clear the box to hide the band.

Where it appears: the homepage, as a quiet band between sections.

Not shown by the Minimal layout. Pair it with Scripture reference.

Scripture reference scripture_reference TextMatthew 18:20 (WEB) by default

The reference for the verse above. Note the translation if your version requires an acknowledgement.

Where it appears: under the verse, as its citation.

Shown only with a verse.

Homepage layout homepage_layout SelectWelcome by default

Four different homepages: Welcome, Service-led, Sermon-led and Minimal. What each one shows is listed in How the homepage builds.

Where it appears: the homepage.

Sections within a layout appear only when they have content, so changing layout never leaves an empty block.

Hero style hero_style SelectImage by default

Image is a full-width photograph with a white welcome card. Split puts the text beside a photograph. Gradient is a solid brand-colour block that needs no photo.

Where it appears: the top of the homepage.

The Sermon-led layout replaces the hero with your latest sermon when you have one.

Hero image hero_image ImageEmpty by default

The photograph for the hero. Choose a bright, welcoming image of real people from your own church where you can.

Where it appears: the homepage hero.

Shown in the settings panel only for the Image and Split styles. With none set, your publication cover under Brand is used.

Image style image_style SelectRounded by default

Rounded gives photographs soft corners. Arched shapes a few featured portrait photographs with church-window tops.

Where it appears: featured photographs on the homepage.

Purely visual; your content is unaffected.

Hero heading hero_heading TextWelcome to our church family by default

The main headline in the hero.

Where it appears: the homepage hero.

Keep it short and human. A plain welcome works better than a slogan.

Hero subheading hero_subheading TextA welcome sentence by default

Supporting text under the headline. Two short sentences is plenty.

Where it appears: the homepage hero.

The hero buttons are wired for you: Plan your visit goes to your Plan Your Visit page, and Watch online to your live-stream link, only when one is set.

Show giving CTA show_giving_cta ToggleOn by default

A giving call to action on the homepage.

Where it appears: the homepage, in every layout that includes it.

Turn it off if you do not take online gifts. The Give button in your navigation is separate.

Look and feel

Light and open

Pages sit on white with soft stone-coloured bands, so photography and your own content do the work. Headings use a sturdy book serif and body text a friendly humanist sans, chosen to be easy to read for every age in a congregation.

Accent colour

Set your main colour under Brand, in Settings → Design & branding. Everything follows it: links, buttons, tinted panels, focus rings and the footer. Choose a mid-to-dark colour; a very pale accent such as bright yellow or a pastel will read poorly against a white page. The default is a deep lake blue with a gold secondary.

Photography first

The homepage opens with a full-width photograph and a plain white welcome card, followed by a service times strip, so visitors see when you meet before they scroll. Bright photographs of real people from your own church work best. Dark or heavily cropped images make the whole site feel heavy.

No motion tricks

Nothing animates on scroll, nothing is hidden without JavaScript and hover effects are limited to small colour and shadow changes.

How the homepage builds itself

Each layout is a different running order. Sections appear only when their content exists, so a new site never shows an empty block. If you reorder anything in your own copy, keep tinted and white bands alternating.

LayoutRunning order
WelcomeHero with service times strip, next steps, welcome, latest sermons, ministries, events, giving, testimonies, scripture verse, news and newsletter
Service-ledHero, service times, next steps, welcome, latest sermons, events, scripture verse, giving, news and newsletter
Sermon-ledYour latest sermon in place of the hero, more sermons, service times, reading plans, events, scripture verse, giving, news and newsletter
MinimalHero, service times, giving and newsletter only

What feeds each section:

  • Latest sermons — posts tagged sermon or #sermon.
  • Ministries — pages tagged ministry.
  • Upcoming events — posts tagged event. Ghost has no event date field, so put the date and time in the post's Excerpt, for example Saturday 20 September · 14:00.
  • Stories — posts tagged testimony. Put the person's name in the title and their words in the excerpt, so the quote is attributed to them rather than to the staff account that typed it up.
  • Latest news — every post without a special tag. Sermons, reading plans, events, testimonies and prayer posts are excluded.
  • Welcome — a page with the slug welcome.
  • Newsletter — Ghost's own signup, shown only when memberships are on and open to sign-ups.

Each layout has its own look, so the quickest way to choose is to try all four in the Design preview.

Service times and the live badge

Enter your weekly services in Service schedule, using this compact form:

Day HH:MM Name @ Campus; Day HH:MM Name @ Campus

For example: Sunday 09:30 Traditional @ High Street; Sunday 11:00 Contemporary @ High Street; Wednesday 19:30 Prayer @ Online. The @ Campus part is optional.

  • The theme builds service cards for the homepage, the Service Times page and the footer, and a next-service banner.
  • With a Livestream url, it shows a We're live badge from the start of a service until 105 minutes later.
  • Times are your church's local times. The theme works them out in your site timezone (Settings → General), so a visitor watching from abroad sees the badge at the right moment, with a short zone label such as (GMT) beside the times.
  • Your publication language decides the format: en-GB prints 18:30 and en-US prints 6:30 PM. Enter the schedule in 24-hour form either way.
  • For directions, a map or campus details, write them in the content of the Service Times page. It renders above the generated cards, where it reads as your welcome rather than an afterthought.

Sermons

Ghost has posts, pages, tags and authors, so a sermon is a post:

Sermon fieldWhere it goes in Ghost
SpeakerThe post's author. The author page becomes the speaker's archive.
SeriesThe post's primary tag. The tag's feature image is the series artwork.
Books of the BibleAdditional tags, such as Romans or Psalms, for browsing by book
PassageThe post's Excerpt, for example Romans 8:1–11
AudioA Ghost audio card in the post
VideoA YouTube or Vimeo embed card in the post

Add a sermon

  1. Create a post and write the title.
  2. Add the tag sermon (public), or #sermon (internal) if you uploaded the routes file. The theme detects either and shows the sermon layout, so you do not have to choose a template.
  3. Add the series as the first tag, then any book or topic tags.
  4. Put the passage in the Excerpt.
  5. Add an audio card for the recording, which becomes the player and download, and an embed card for video if you have it.
  6. Set the author to the speaker, add a feature image and publish.

A series is a public tag with a name, description and feature image, set under Settings → Tags. Its page is the series landing view. The sermon archive offers Speakers and Series & topics chips, scoped to sermons: a speaker appears only if they have preached, and the tags used for ministries, events and prayer never show up as sermon topics.

Podcast feeds, honestly. Ghost has no audio URL field, so the sermon feeds carry no audio files. They work for readers and feed readers, but Apple Podcasts and Spotify will not accept them as a podcast. For a real podcast, host your audio with a podcast host and link to it from your site.

Ministries, events and reading plans

Ministries

Create a page for each ministry, tag it ministry, add a feature image, choose the Ministry template, set the author to the leader and put the meeting time and place in the Excerpt. The Ministries page lists them in a grid.

Events, news and stories

Posts tagged event feed the homepage events section, with the date taken from the Excerpt. Posts with no special tag are your news. See How the homepage builds.

Reading plans

Create a plan as a page or post tagged reading-plan (or #reading-plan with the routes file) and choose the Reading Plan template. Use a heading for each day. A Print this plan button and a print stylesheet are included.

Forms and prayer

Ghost cannot store form submissions, so the prayer and volunteer forms send to an endpoint that you set in Form endpoint:

  1. A webhook (recommended). Paste an https:// address from a forms service such as Formspark, Formspree or Basin, or a Make or Zapier webhook. The form submits in the background and shows an inline confirmation, with no page reload.
  2. Email. Paste mailto:[email protected] and the form opens the visitor's email app, pre-addressed, with a readable plain-text body.

Every form includes a consent checkbox, a link to your /privacy/ page and a hidden field that deters spam bots. Plain http:// endpoints are refused, because these forms carry personal details.

The prayer wall

The Prayer page can show a public wall built from posts tagged prayer. Requests arrive through the form, you review them, and you publish only approved ones as short posts with that tag. Keep them anonymous unless you have clear permission, and never publish sensitive personal details. Visitors can tap I prayed, which is remembered in their own browser only.

Giving

The Giving page assembles three things:

  1. Your content. Write the introduction, then add your provider's buttons with Ghost button cards (for example CAF, Stripe or Give a Little), plus bank details and text-to-give instructions as ordinary content.
  2. Recurring giving. If you have created paid tiers under Settings → Membership → Tiers and connected Stripe, they appear with monthly and yearly Give buttons through Ghost's Portal. Without Stripe connected, no tier is shown.
  3. UK Gift Aid. With Show gift aid on, a standard explainer with a link to your declaration form.

This keeps your existing giving provider in charge of the money while still offering native recurring giving through Ghost and Stripe. Sanctuary never handles a payment itself.

Members, newsletter and accessibility

  • The newsletter signup uses Ghost's own members flow, shows a confirmation or Ghost's error beneath the field, and is hidden entirely unless memberships are enabled and open to sign-ups. The homepage ends with a signup band, and other pages carry one in the footer.
  • Search is Ghost's built-in search, opened from the header and the 404 page. Native Ghost comments appear on posts once enabled, and the footer offers Sign in / Account when memberships are on.
  • The text size and contrast control sits in the header of every page and is remembered per browser. It is always on, with no setting to remove it, because congregations skew older and it is the control visitors actually use.
  • The theme targets WCAG 2.1 AA: semantic landmarks, a skip link, keyboard-navigable menus with visible focus, AA-contrast colours, 48px touch targets and reduced-motion support.

Beyond the settings

Upload the routes file for clean addresses

The theme works without any routing changes, but the included routes.yaml gives you /sermons/, /reading-plans/, /news/, /topics/ and /speakers/, plus a sermon feed. It is site configuration, not part of the theme, so upload it separately under Settings → Advanced → Labs → Routes. Without it, use public tags: a tag with the slug sermon and another with reading-plan give you archives at /tag/sermon/ and /tag/reading-plan/.

Translate the theme

Every piece of text goes through Ghost's translation helper, so the theme follows your publication language. Copy locales/en.json to locales/fr.json (or your language code), translate the right-hand side of each line and leave the keys alone. Keep placeholders such as {title} intact, re-upload the theme and set the language under Settings → General. Anything left untranslated falls back to English. The What to expect answers on Plan Your Visit live in the same file, so you can reword them for your church there.

Use different fonts

Choose heading and body fonts in Ghost's Brand settings and the theme uses them in place of its own. Ghost serves the font files, so this adds a font request that the bundled and system options do not make.

Small style changes that survive updates

Put CSS overrides in Settings → Code injection → Site header rather than editing screen.css. Injected CSS survives theme updates; direct edits do not. If you fork the theme, keep its name sanctuary stable, because Ghost stores your saved settings against the theme name.

Add descriptions for search engines

Ghost only writes a meta description when the content has one. Posts inherit theirs from the excerpt, but tag archives and pages do not, so add a description in the SEO panel of each. Pages and tags without one fall back to your site description.

Troubleshooting

The prayer or volunteer page shows a Contact card, not a form

That is deliberate until you set Form endpoint. A form with nowhere to send would swallow real requests silently, so the theme shows a Contact card instead. Paste an https:// webhook address or a mailto: address and the form appears.

A homepage section is missing

Sections hide when they have no content, and some belong to a particular layout. Check that you have published posts or pages with the right tag, such as event, testimony or ministry, and that your chosen Homepage layout includes that section. See How the homepage builds.

Events show the wrong date

Ghost has no event date, so the theme reads it from the post's Excerpt. Put the date and time there, for example Saturday 20 September · 14:00. Without an excerpt it falls back to the publish date.

The Watch online button or We're live badge is missing

Both need a Livestream url. The badge also needs a matching entry in Service schedule, and only shows from a service's start until 105 minutes later, in your site timezone under Settings → General.

Service times show 6:30 PM and I want 18:30

Format follows your publication language. Set it to English (United Kingdom), en-GB, under Settings → General → Publication language. Always type the schedule itself in 24-hour form.

The Contact buttons are not showing

They appear only once a page with the slug contact exists and is published.

The newsletter signup is missing

It needs memberships enabled in Ghost, under Settings → Membership, and open to sign-ups. It is hidden otherwise. The footer form is also skipped on the homepage so two signups never stack.

Sermon archives are empty, or open at /tag/sermon/

Tag your posts sermon (public) or #sermon (internal). The clean /sermons/ address needs the routes file uploaded under Settings → Advanced → Labs.

Apple Podcasts or Spotify will not accept the sermon feed

That is a limit of Ghost, not a fault: Ghost has no per-post audio field, so the feed carries no audio files. Use a podcast host for a real podcast and link to it from your site.

I cannot find the theme settings panel

Sanctuary must be the active theme, not merely uploaded. Activate it under Settings → Design & branding → Change theme, then reload Ghost Admin. Custom themes also require Ghost(Pro) Publisher or higher, or a self-hosted install.

Still stuck?

Email [email protected] with your Ghost version, the Sanctuary version, the page URL and a screenshot. If you have customised the theme, say what you changed. I aim to reply within two business days, and support covers installation, documented settings and confirmed defects.
